Introduction

For those that call themselves "90s gamers", the classic game Re-volt is no stranger. Initially released in 1999, Re-volt has been a successful multi-platform project. I personally must have poured over a 100 hours into it.

I decided it was time to re-visit the game, this time by making a 3D game asset of the classic "Dust Mite", all while learning Substance Painter.

The project

The broad idea was: create a detailed, new-gen version of the Dust Mite using 3DsMax and Substance Painter.

The lack of reference images or drawings was going obviously going to be a challenge. I started gathering in-game screenshots and other fan art.

The modelling part of the project was a combination of hand-modelling and re-using different elements from RC cars 3D models found on Turbosquid. The aim was to keep it fairly low-poly to be potentially used in game.

Texturing part of the project was the part I was most waiting for. The rich library of smart materials, intuitive controls and high quality previews (including raytracing) makes the entire creative process extremely satisfying.

Nearly two full days later, the asset was ready. I decided to have a bit more fun with it, by creating a few different realistic variations of the model: clean, dirty and muddy:
